Swayne’s Hartebeest’s
MZNP is one of the wildlife conservation place known for its good population of the critically endangered endemic Swayne’s Hartebeest. The Park covers an area of 210 k.m2 and is located 460 km and 235 Southwest of Addis Ababa and Hawassa respectively. It was established in 2005 and found between Gamo and Gofa Zones between the coordinates of 6025’ North and 37014’ East. Elevation with in the park ranges from 1000m to 1200m above sea level. The park has got its name from the river Maze which crosses it. The Park is covered by savannah grassland with scattered deciduous broad-leaved trees as well as reverie association along with the main watercourses. The wild animal of the MzNP supports a wide range of savannah species. So far 39 mammals and 196 birds’ species have been recorded. It is one of the three sites in the world where a good population of the endemic Swayne’s Hartebeest’s are being conserved. Red buck, African Buffalo, Warthog, Bushbuck, Waterbuck, Greater Kudu, Lesser kudu, Bush pig, Omnibus Baboon, Verve Monkey, Lion, Leopard, and Wild cats are the abundant wildlife in the park. The park is easily accessible on the road from Wolayta to Gofa. The head office of the park is 20km from Selam Berr town.
